Her er dansk svømmeunions seneste påhit:

OBS!

Agree overall with your points if your parents are very much against this change. The point is - I don't think they are if you present it the right way and mention all the positive things:
(Hmm… I think you have written something about "change" also, haven't you? … )

Points to you this round, Mr. C

Want to come out and see my 5 year olds doing a slow, but extremely legal 25 fly some time?

+2 #26 Ricki Clausen 2011-06-06 11:39 Agree overall with your points if your parents are very much against this change. The point is - I don't think they are if you present it the right way and mention all the positive things:
- Better preparation phase without school (for ALL athletes - not only Olympic and EJM swimmers)
- Possibility to go on a pre DM training camp.
- Easier for parents working in an office to get vacation a little later (as many other have the vacation in the socalled "industriferie" the first three week of july.
- Easier to limit the vacation time to 3-4 weeks for your juniors/seniors in stead of sending them on vacation 1st July and seeing them again perhaps 5 weeks later.

This is somewhat like the "Butterfly for babies" discussion isn't it?

If you endorse it and tell them that this is not hard but actually beneficial in many ways they will of cause adapt to this… if they believe in their leader ;o)

And that is not being a hypocrit. That is being willing to change (Hmm… I think you have written something about "change" also, haven't you? … )

It got your attention :->

What I personally believe or what any single person might personally believe should not be an issue. Some of us live at our pools, after all, joyfully, willingly, forsaking all others etc. and have the opinion that there is no life like it

However, what one person might personally endorse just might not be something they can sell to a culture that lives and breathes the opposite of what they are trying to sell. That is why one would need really good reasons, well in advance.

Will I be planning for it to be in the middle of July 2012? Yep, sure will be writing my plans to thast effect. How many of my group do I see attending in the middle of July next year? Three less than I will be planning for, maybe four, including new qualifiers. Having that many fewer swimmers at the season ending championships sort of wastes the preceding year of training. Relay teams get broken up, teenage girl swimmers coming out of a plateau can find it to be the last straw, that mom and dad are refusing to change something that mom and dad did as children, that grandma and grandpa did as children etc

Swimming might be _my_ life but I don't know too many parents of age group and junior swimmers who so joyfully embrace membership in the cult of the pool and it is THOSE people who will be telling me if I have a team to DM next July. Also given that my strong belief for 99% of all swimmers is that their priorities MUST be family, school, swimming, it would sort of be hypocritical for me to turn around and say differently, simply for the sake of attending a DM. Or any swim meet.

Leaders are not supposed to be hypocrits, right?

+4 #24 Ricki Clausen 2011-06-05 16:19 Hi Michele.

I guess we just don't agree on this. I am for this change and do not recognize the same need to have vacation in july by the people in my club…

And a little linguistic correction: "Skat" in danish is comparable to "my love" or "my lover" not the english "honey" or the likes. So if you don't want people to get the wrong idea perhaps you should use another word )

Hi Michele (With one ELL, Rricki, tak skat!)

This is one more reason to buy your own pool from DISH ;o)

You know I want to

Citerer Ricki Clausen:
Swimming wise I think this makes perfect sense apart from the pool challenge (You can rent time in Herfølge Svømmehal next year in july that is a promise! We have a lot of time available and we are running the pool ourselves from july this year.)

THAT went in my bring forwards

See, personally, I do not mind a season that runs 1 Sept to 31 July. I grew up with that. But where I grew up was not Denmark. Canadian Nationals are end of July back home, but then again, Canadians do not have a cultural history of taking an entire month off en masse.

And I think there are a couple of reasons why this change has been made that we are not being told.

Oh, no wait… HAVE we been told why yet? Seriously, have I missed an annoucement that justifies this? It will have to be a really good set of justifications to sell to my swim parents too, ones that I can confidently support and endorse. If the reasons for the change are not valid, solid and based on more than "they need to have less vacation time" and to assist an incredibly small percentage of athletes to prep for a major competition somewhere… see what I am worried about?
