+3 #3 Michele Greb 2011-03-01 06:30 Thanks Michael

Yeah, Herlev has a great new pool. Actually, I was drooling looking at the photos. I want one too.

One of the reasons I like and actually prefer to be outside Copenhagen is exactly for some of the reasons you are dancing around. It's not that competition from neighbouring clubs makes me nervous, not one bit. Competition is good, clean fun… usually. It can get a bit dirty at times, but meh, so what. We've all seen that, most have experienced that (as coaches)and we survived.

But when a coach is trying to build something there are always rough spots and having someone else TOO close makes it damn hard to get the critical mass effect that enables some plans to take form. Having someone else with a great reputation and a great facility too close can be just a bit too much competition when one has to take a longer view.

Customers everywhere are the same: they want the best deal for the lowest price and lots of personal service when THEY want it. Part of being a successful part of the service industry (and yes, a swim club is at its core part of the service industry: we provide a service to our clients (parents) and customers (swimmers) ) is having a marketing plan to ensure our clients and customers keep coming back.

If we can keep them coming back, then we can get through organizational changes that are both predictable and documented in many easily obtainable books and papers. But we have to have a plan, not just on that pool deck, but structurally and organizationall y as well. We cannot leave it up to our volunteers to do alone. As coaches, we must be an active part of the process. After all, our ability to keep a roof over our heads depends on the stability of our organization. Having a plan in place helps that.

Hmm hmm, now how did I drift away from my original intent in this post into organizational development again… must be the time of day.

Signing off, more random pre-morning practice thoughts from a delightfully quiet little pool in a delightfully quiet little town that delightfully has no neighbouring clubs planning on building a a 50m facility before I do!

Flarup

+5 #1 Michele Greb 2011-02-25 06:10 Tsk, language. A nice example of differences in culture in western civilization

How's it going in Holbæk? Just great! We just came off a week 7 training camp in Esberg to a time trial on Tuesday. Posted some great times even though by most standards the training camp we had was not as tough as it could (or should) have been. The main thing is that the swimmers had a great time working harder than normal, facing new tasks, learning and bonding as a team.

Coming up is a little visit to Berlin ISM next week. What really impressed me is that every single swimmer in my more advanced groups chose to attend, even though there was a cost involved that might have been a bit of a pinch for some families so soon after Christmas and camp. I am so thoroughly humbled by the change in the feel and attitude of this club from June 2010 until now.

My board members are just super, my holdkoordinator s are angels, my office manager and I sit and talk, laugh and work our butts off in admin while having a great time… so many positives out here.

The club culture is changing, slowly but surely. Organizationall y, socially, competitively, it is changing and at times it is hard to pull back and just let changes settle in and take hold, and not direct everything. Rather, at times, it is vital to let change blossom under the impetus of formerly applied external forces and then follow that change along. Sometimes leading means letting those you lead take the initiative and then support that new growth and development.

It's a pretty great thing to witness, even moreso to be part of and you know… the next few years are going to be really interesting out here as long range planning becomes short term, then actuality.

Minor annoyances like weird time standards and schedules can be worked around and I know some of the folk around me just smile and laugh when I throw up my hands and indulge in some new Danish words that would turn the air blue if said in English. It's good to be here. And I wish I had more education to properly document and observe all the intricate changes occurring.

Ah well, one more thing to put on my "To Do" list I guess and keep me motivated and coaching a little longer And that cannot be a bad thing at all

So, next person? How is life in your club these days? What good things have popped up this year for you?
